Welcome, Thirsty Friends
Over the last decade or so Peru has cemented itself as a global culinary juggernaut. Its varied traditional regional cuisines and modern eateries have won over the palates of casual tourists and international critics alike. Peru’s place among the great food destinations in the world was cemented in 2023 when Chef Virgilio Martinez’s avant-garde fine dining establishment, Central, was named the best restaurant in the world.
It is of little surprise then that the beverage scene followed suit. Although Peru’s national drink is Pisco, a clear, distilled spirit made from grapes, Peru is at its core a country of beer drinkers. The combination of a great and growing culinary scene and a long established love for barley and hops, it was only a matter of time before craft beer began to take hold.
While the epicenter of the craft beer explosion in Peru is the nation’s capital, Lima, there are quality local beers being made all over the country. A 2019 report estimated approximately 100 craft breweries existed nationwide. Slowly but surely the grasp of the industrial macro lager is loosening on the Peruvian population.
As the production and demand for Peruvian craft beer continues to grow, so does the number of talented Peruvian brewers, many of whom employ local ingredients to create unique and memorable flavor combinations.
I hope to make this a place to pay tribute to the makers, spaces, and of course the beverages that are propelling this scene to the next level.
¡Salud!
